You open the email. The email is from the accountant. Or the bank. Or the client who has not yet paid. And the body responds. The body responds before the mind has even processed the numbers. The chest tightens. The breath gets shallow. The stomach drops. The jaw clenches. The hands, if you are being honest with yourself, are shaking. The body is, in many cases, producing a panic response to a piece of information that, in the actual world, may or may not be a real threat. The body is, in many cases, treating the money the way the body would treat a predator. The body is not wrong. The body is doing exactly what the body was designed to do. The body is also, in many cases, producing a chronic activation that is, in many cases, costing you the very resource that the body is trying to protect.
If you have ever felt, in your body, the panic of money — if the spreadsheet produces a real, physiological response, if the bank statement is something you avoid opening for days, if the conversation about money with your partner produces a tightness in your chest that lasts for hours — you know exactly what I am describing. The financial anxiety is, in many cases, not a thinking problem. The financial anxiety is, in many cases, a body problem. The anxiety lives in the gut, in the chest, in the jaw, in the shoulders. The anxiety has, in many cases, been there for years. The anxiety has, in many cases, been passed down, in the body's tissues, in the body's posture, in the body's way of holding the money.
This article is for the person who is ready to address the financial anxiety at the somatic level. We are going to look at where the financial anxiety lives in the body. We are going to look at the personality wiring that produces the anxiety. And I am going to teach you a specific, embodied, paced protocol for unblocking the body, for releasing the anxiety, and for letting the money be the resource that the money is, instead of the threat that the body has been producing.
Where the Financial Anxiety Lives in the Body
The financial anxiety, in many cases, lives in the gut. The gut is, in many ways, the second brain of the body. The gut is lined with the enteric nervous system, which contains, by some estimates, 500 million neurons. The gut is, in many cases, the place where the body's felt sense of the money is stored. The gut is the place where the panic arrives. The gut is the place where the "knot" forms. The gut is, in many cases, the body's way of saying, "The money is not safe. The money is, in fact, the thing that is going to determine whether we survive."
The financial anxiety also, in many cases, lives in the chest. The chest is the home of the heart. The heart is, in many cases, the place where the body's felt sense of the love and the security is stored. The money, in many cases, has been associated, in the body's experience, with the love and the security. The money, in many cases, has been the way the love was demonstrated. The money, in many cases, has been the way the security was provided. The chest tightens, in many cases, because the body is afraid that the love and the security are going to leave. The chest is, in many cases, the place where the felt sense of the love and the security is held. The chest is also, in many cases, the place where the felt sense of the threat to the love and the security is felt.
Pause & Reflect: Take ten seconds to bring your attention to the gut. The place just below the belly button. Notice what is happening in the gut right now. The knot? The holding? The breath? Just notice. The gut is the body's record of the money. The record can be released.
The Personality Wiring Behind the Financial Anxiety
Personality psychology gives us a clear map. The financial anxiety is most pronounced in people who score high on Neuroticism (the threat sensitivity, the chronic worry, the felt sense of the money as dangerous), high on Conscientiousness (the high standards, the sense of responsibility, the perfectionism), and low on Openness (in the sense of being less able to see the multiple possibilities for the money). The combination is a person who is, in every measurable way, the perfect candidate for the financial anxiety. The combination is also, in many cases, the perfect setup for the chronic dysregulation that the anxiety produces.
The MBTI types most aligned with the financial anxiety pattern include the ISFJ, the ISTJ, the ESFJ, the ESTJ, the INFJ, the INTJ, the ISFP, and the INTP. The Enneagram types most vulnerable are the 6 (the Loyalist), the 1 (the Reformer), the 9 (the Peacemaker), and the 4 (the Romantic). All of these types share the trait of the worry. The worry is the gift. The worry is also, in many cases, the cost.
What the Anxiety Is Costing You
The chronic financial anxiety is not free. The anxiety is, in fact, very expensive. The cost shows up in four primary domains. The first is the body domain. The chronic activation of the anxiety produces a cascade of effects: muscle tension, sleep disturbance, immune suppression, gut issues, and a persistent sense of being on alert. The person with the financial anxiety often does not recognize the activation as stress. They experience it as "being responsible." The responsible is, in fact, dysregulation.
The second is the relationship domain. The person with the financial anxiety, in many cases, has relationships that are organized around the money. The partner is expected to manage the money. The family is expected to live within the budget. The relationships become, in many cases, a service to the money. The cost is the connection. The cost is significant.
The third is the career domain. The person with the financial anxiety, in many cases, has a career that is shaped by the money. The career is, in many cases, the safe career, the stable career, the career that produces the predictable income. The career is, in many cases, not the calling. The career is, in many cases, the money. The cost is the calling. The cost is significant.
The fourth is the meaning domain. The person with the financial anxiety, in the long run, often experiences a kind of existential fatigue. The money has been the worry for so long. The money has been the focus for so long. The focus has, in many cases, become the only relationship the person has with the larger meaning. The cost is the meaning. The cost is significant.
The Somatic Unblocking Protocol: A Four-Part Practice
Below is the protocol I teach every client who is unblocking the body to heal the financial anxiety. The protocol is not a way of thinking differently about the money. The thinking, in many cases, is not the problem. The protocol is a way of releasing the body, of letting the body be the body, and of letting the money be the resource that the money is.
Part One: The Body Scan of the Money
The first part is the body scan of the money. The person with the financial anxiety, in a private moment, agrees to bring their full attention to the gut and the chest. Notice the sensations. The knot. The tightness. The holding. The breath that does not fully complete. The body scan is the practice of giving the body the same attention that the mind has been giving the spreadsheet. The attention is the practice. The practice is the gift.
Part Two: The Ancestral Money Story
The second part is the ancestral money story. The person with the financial anxiety, in a private journal, writes down the specific money story that was passed down. The family's relationship to the money. The grandparents' experience. The parents' experience. The losses, the gains, the embarrassments, the secrets. The writing is the practice of making the implicit explicit. The writing is the practice of seeing the money story as a story, not as a fact of who you are.
For each item, ask: "Is this story mine? Is this story serving me, or is this story costing me?" The ancestral money story is the practice of separating the personal relationship to the money from the inherited relationship to the money. The separation is the gift.
Part Three: The Money Body Release
The third part is the money body release. The person with the financial anxiety, on a weekly basis, agrees to do a body-based practice that releases the money story from the body. The practice might be: a 30-minute walk with the specific intention of releasing the money story, a 20-minute body scan focused on the gut, a somatic experiencing session, a hot bath with the specific intention of dissolving the knot, a vigorous workout with the specific intention of shaking off the chronic tension. The money body release is the practice of letting the body complete the stress response. The body has, in many cases, been holding the money story for years. The body, in many cases, needs a specific practice to let the story go. The release is the gift.
Part Four: The Money Reframe Practice
The fourth part is the money reframe practice. The person with the financial anxiety, in the moment of the money panic, agrees to say one sentence to themselves. "The money is a resource. The resource is here. The resource is not the threat." The money reframe is the practice of interrupting the panic in the moment. The reframe is the practice of returning the body to the present, where the money is, in fact, the resource that the money is. The reframe is the gift.
What to Expect When You Begin the Practice
When the person with the financial anxiety begins the practice, the anxiety will protest. The anxiety will say, "You are being irresponsible. You are letting the money slip away. The worry is the responsible thing." The anxiety is, in many cases, the family voice. The family voice is, in many cases, the very thing the practice is working to update. The update is the practice. The practice is the gift. The gift is the next chapter.
When the Anxiety Needs More
If the financial anxiety is producing significant distress, if it is leading to chronic avoidance, panic attacks, or self-harm, if it is affecting your ability to function in your own life, please work with a therapist. A therapist trained in somatic experiencing, EMDR, or Internal Family Systems can help you work with the deeper architecture of the money story. The architecture is not your enemy. The architecture is, in many cases, the smartest thing you had. The architecture is also ready to evolve. The evolution is the resource. The resource is the next chapter.
If this feels like a struggle you can't solve alone, it might be your unique wiring. Let's decode it together at MyTraitsLab. And if you are noticing that the financial anxiety is now affecting your body, your relationships, or your sense of self — that the money story has become so loud that the resource is unreachable — that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring behind the anxiety, and we can show you a personalized somatic protocol that fits the way your specific body has been holding the money.
