I want to start with a confession that I think will produce a recognition, and that I think will save you a lot of unnecessary suffering. The "what if" spiral — the chronic, often invisible, often debilitating loop of the catastrophic thinking, the "what if this happens, what if that happens, what if everything goes wrong" — has been treated, by the well-meaning people in your life, by the popular psychology on the internet, by the therapy world in some cases, as a thought problem. The thought is the work. The treatment has been the cognitive reframing, the rational response, the "look at the evidence" approach. The approach is the work. The approach is the work that does not work. The work is the source of the chronic suffering. The suffering is the work.
The "what if" spiral is not a thought problem. The "what if" spiral is a body problem. The body is the source. The source is the work. The work is the chronic activation. The activation is the source of the catastrophic thinking. The thinking is the work. The work is the work that does not work. The work is the source of the chronic suffering. The suffering is the work.
The physical protocol is the alternative. The protocol is the body-based, deliberate, structured, ongoing practice that interrupts the spiral at the body level, before the spiral has the time to become the catastrophic thinking. The protocol is the work. The work is the body. The body is the spiral-interrupt. The interrupt is the freedom.
Why the "What If" Spiral Happens in the Body
The "what if" spiral happens in the body for a reason that the cognitive-only culture rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the chronic activation of the nervous system, the chronic fight-or-flight, the chronic low-grade anxiety, is the chronic state of the catastrophizing mind. The state is the work. The state is the source of the spiral. The spiral is the work.
The catastrophizing mind, in the chronic state, is the mind that is constantly scanning the future, for the threat, for the disaster, for the "what if." The scanning is the work. The scanning is the source of the spiral. The spiral is the work.
The scanning, in the body, is the body that is in the chronic activation. The activation is the work. The activation is the source of the spiral. The spiral is the work.
What the Physical Protocol Actually Is
The physical protocol is the deliberate, structured, body-based, real-time practice that interrupts the spiral at the body level. The protocol is the work. The work is the body. The body is the interrupt. The interrupt is the freedom.
The protocol has three interventions. The three interventions are the breath intervention, the body intervention, and the orientation intervention. The three are the work.
Intervention 1: The Breath Intervention. The breath intervention is the first intervention. The breath intervention is the deliberate, structured, in-the-moment practice of the slow exhale, in a way that activates the parasympathetic system, in a way that interrupts the spiral at the body level. The breath intervention is the work.
The breath intervention in practice: a slow inhale through the nose for a count of four. A pause. A slow exhale through the mouth for a count of six, seven, or eight. Three to five cycles. The breath intervention is the foundation. The foundation is the work.
Intervention 2: The Body Intervention. The body intervention is the second intervention. The body intervention is the deliberate, structured, in-the-moment practice of the body-based release, in a way that releases the chronic activation, in a way that interrupts the spiral at the body level. The body intervention is the work.
The body intervention in practice: the deliberate drop of the shoulders. The deliberate softening of the jaw. The deliberate unclenching of the fists. The deliberate release of the belly. The body intervention, in the moment of the spiral, is the body-based interrupt. The interrupt is the work.
Intervention 3: The Orientation Intervention. The orientation intervention is the third intervention. The orientation intervention is the deliberate, structured, in-the-moment practice of the orientation, in a way that pulls the nervous system out of the catastrophic future, into the present. The orientation intervention is the work.
The orientation intervention in practice: the slow look at five specific things in the environment, the slow naming of each. The orientation is the pull to the present. The pull is the interrupt. The interrupt is the work.
How the Protocol Is Built Over 90 Days
The protocol is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.
Days 1-30: The Breath Intervention. The daily practice, the slow exhale, the foundation. The foundation is the work.
Days 31-60: Add the Body Intervention. The daily practice, the body-based release, the source. The source is the work.
Days 61-90: Add the Orientation Intervention. The daily practice, the orientation, the marker. The marker is the work.
By the end of the 90 days, the three interventions are in place. The three interventions are the physical protocol. The protocol is the work. The work is the body. The body is the interrupt. The interrupt is the freedom.
What the Protocol Looks Like in the Actual "What If" Spiral
Let me describe what the protocol looks like in the actual "what if" spiral. The spiral is the moment the catastrophic thinking is starting, the moment the "what if" is arriving, the moment the future is being scanned for the threat. The spiral is the work.
With the protocol in place, the spiral is different. The spiral is still the spiral. The "what if" is still arriving. The difference is the protocol. The protocol is the breath, the foundation, the source of the interrupt. The protocol is the body, the source, the source of the release. The protocol is the orientation, the marker, the source of the present. The protocol is the work.
Without the protocol in place, the spiral is the chronic catastrophic thinking. The thinking is the work.
The "Pause & Reflect" Moment
Take 10 seconds and notice the last "what if" spiral. What did the body do? What did the chronic thinking look like? What would the protocol have looked like? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the physical protocol.
What the Physical Protocol Is Not
It is not the suppression. The protocol is not the way of suppressing the "what if," in the name of the interrupt. The "what if" is real. The "what if" is the work. The protocol is the way of interrupting the "what if," in a way that the "what if" does not become the spiral. The interrupt is the work.
It is also not the perfection. The protocol is not the perfect execution of the three interventions, every spiral, at the highest level. The protocol is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the available interrupt. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.
When the Protocol Is Not Enough
The protocol is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical generalized anxiety disorder, for the trauma of a chronically catastrophizing system. If the catastrophizing is producing a clinical crisis, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A doctor. A specialist. The protocol is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.
Closing: The Spiral Is the Wiring
The spiral is the wiring. The wiring is the work. The work is the protocol. The protocol is the freedom.
You are not the chronic spiral. The chronic spiral is the work of the chronic activation. The protocol is the work. The work is the freedom.
And if you are noticing that the spiral is especially frequent, that the chronic activation is especially entrenched, that the protocol is especially hard to access, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-neuroticism person whose nervous system is the chronic spiral, the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-control is the chronic spiral, the high-sensitivity person whose nervous system is the chronic spiral — so the physical protocol is shaped to fit the person you actually are.
