Step 5: Refine Your System
Your system won't be perfect right away. Refine it based on what works:
What tools are you actually using?
What tools feel burdensome?
Where are you still forgetting things?
Adjust your system to address these issues.
When Working Memory Hacks Aren't Enough
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your working memory fails. You forget something important. You lose your place. You can't remember what you were doing.
When this happens:
1. Don't judge yourself. Working memory limitations are neurological, not character flaws.
2. Ask for help. "Can you remind me what I was doing?" "Can you repeat that?" Most people are understanding.
3. Use your tools. Check your notes, your list, your calendar. The information is probably there.
4. Start over if needed. Sometimes you just have to restart. It's frustrating, but it's better than being paralyzed.
The Long Game: Working With Your Working Memory
Here's the truth: your working memory capacity probably won't increase significantly. And that's okay. The goal isn't to expand your working memory—it's to work around its limitations.
