I want to start with a question that I think will be useful for the rest of your life, and that I want you to answer honestly, before we go any further. Right now, in this moment, as you read this sentence, what is your nervous system doing? Not your mind. Not your thoughts. Your nervous system. Is it in the calm state, the state that is open, regulated, present, available for the connection? Or is it in the activated state, the state that is defended, vigilant, scanning for the next threat, available for the fight-or-flight? Most people I ask this question to, when they are honest, realize they have no idea. They have lost the felt sense of their own nervous system state. The loss is the work.
The autonomic safeguard is the practice of getting back in touch with the felt sense. The safeguard is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the daily somatic drills that keep the nervous system from getting stuck in the fight-or-flight. The safeguard is the work. The work is the nervous system. The system is the freedom.
Why the Nervous System Gets Stuck
The nervous system gets stuck in the fight-or-flight for a reason that the cognitive-only culture rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the fight-or-flight is the body's automatic response to the perceived threat. The response is automatic. The response is fast. The response is the work. The response, in the modern life, is being triggered by threats that are not the original threat the response was designed for. The original threat was the acute danger. The modern threat is the chronic low-grade overwhelm. The overwhelm is the work.
The nervous system, in the chronic overwhelm, is the nervous system that has been triggering the fight-or-flight, all day, every day, for years. The nervous system is the nervous system that has become stuck. The stuck is the work. The stuck is the source of the chronic anxiety, the chronic reactivity, the chronic depletion. The depletion is the work.
What the Autonomic Safeguard Actually Is
The safeguard is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the daily somatic drills that keep the nervous system out of the chronic fight-or-flight. The safeguard is the work. The work is the nervous system. The system is the freedom.
The safeguard has three drills. The three drills are the breath drill, the body scan drill, and the movement drill. The three are the work.
Drill 1: The Breath Drill. The breath drill is the first drill. The breath drill is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the breath, in a way that produces the activation of the parasympathetic system. The breath drill is the work.
The breath drill in practice: the slow inhale through the nose for a count of four. The pause. The slow exhale through the mouth for a count of six, seven, or eight. Five minutes, twice per day. The breath drill is the foundation. The foundation is the work.
Drill 2: The Body Scan Drill. The body scan drill is the second drill. The body scan drill is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the body scan, in a way that produces the awareness of the nervous system state. The body scan drill is the work.
The body scan drill in practice: five to ten minutes, once or twice per day, lying or sitting, eyes closed, attention moving slowly from the feet to the head, noticing the tension, releasing the tension. The body scan drill is the source. The source is the work.
Drill 3: The Movement Drill. The movement drill is the third drill. The movement drill is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the movement, in a way that produces the regulation of the nervous system. The movement drill is the work.
The movement drill in practice: 20-30 minutes per day of moderate-intensity movement, ideally in nature, with the deliberate attention to the body, the breath, the environment. The movement drill is the marker. The marker is the work.
How the Safeguard Is Built Over 90 Days
The safeguard is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.
Days 1-30: The Breath Drill. Five minutes, twice per day, the slow exhale, the foundation. The foundation is the work.
Days 31-60: Add the Body Scan Drill. Five to ten minutes, once per day, the scan, the source. The source is the work.
Days 61-90: Add the Movement Drill. Twenty to thirty minutes per day, the movement, the marker. The marker is the work.
By the end of the 90 days, the three drills are in place. The three drills are the autonomic safeguard. The safeguard is the work. The work is the nervous system. The system is the freedom.
What the Safeguard Looks Like in the Actual Chronic Overwhelm
Let me describe what the safeguard looks like in the actual chronic overwhelm. The overwhelm is the moment the nervous system is in the chronic fight-or-flight. The overwhelm is the work.
With the safeguard in place, the overwhelm is different. The overwhelm is still the overwhelm. The fight-or-flight is still the fight-or-flight. The difference is the drills. The breath drill is the foundation, the source of the down-regulation. The body scan drill is the source, the source of the awareness. The movement drill is the marker, the source of the regulation. The drills are the safeguard. The safeguard is the work.
Without the safeguard in place, the overwhelm is the chronic stuck. The stuck is the work.
The "Pause & Reflect" Moment
Take 10 seconds and notice the state of your nervous system. Is it in the calm or the activated? What is one signal you can notice in the body? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the autonomic safeguard.
What the Autonomic Safeguard Is Not
It is not the suppression. The safeguard is not the way of suppressing the fight-or-flight, in the name of the regulation. The fight-or-flight is the body's automatic response. The response is the work. The safeguard is the way of down-regulating the response, so the response is not the chronic state. The down-regulation is the work.
It is also not the perfection. The safeguard is not the perfect execution of the three drills, every day, at the highest level. The safeguard is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the regulated nervous system. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.
When the Safeguard Is Not Enough
The safeguard is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical PTSD, for the trauma of a chronically activated nervous system. If the nervous system is so activated that the safeguard cannot be built, the right move is professional support. A therapist trained in somatic modalities — Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR — can work with the deeper patterns. The safeguard is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.
Closing: The Nervous System Is the Work
The nervous system is the work. The work is the breath, the body, the movement. The three are the safeguard. The safeguard is the freedom.
You are not the chronic fight-or-flight. The chronic fight-or-flight is the work of the chronic activation. The drills are the work. The work is the safeguard. The safeguard is the freedom.
And if you are noticing that the nervous system is especially hard to access, that the chronic fight-or-flight is especially entrenched, that the felt sense is especially hard to find, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-neuroticism person whose nervous system is on chronic high alert, the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-control is the chronic fight-or-flight, the high-sensitivity person whose nervous system is reading the environment as the chronic threat — so the autonomic safeguard is shaped to fit the person you actually are.
