The Biology of Boundaries: Nourishing Your Nervous System to Keep Your Personal Boundaries Firm Under Pressure

I want to start with a confession that might be hard to hear, especially if you have been doing the inner work for a while. The boundaries you have been trying to set — the boundary with the difficult colleague, the boundary with the draining friend, the boundary with the family member who keeps asking — those boundaries are not failing because of the people on the other side. Those boundaries are not failing because of the situations, or the timing, or the cultural script. Those boundaries are failing because the nervous system that is supposed to hold them is exhausted. The nervous system, when it is exhausted, cannot hold the boundary. The exhausted is the work.

Most of the boundary advice you have ever received, including some of the advice I have given, has treated the boundary as a cognitive project. The project is the thought, the language, the rehearsed response, the practiced stance. The project is the work. The project, when the nervous system is exhausted, is the work that does not work. The work is the source of the chronic failure. The failure is the work.

The biology of boundaries is the practice of recognizing that the boundary is not just a cognitive project. The boundary is a biological event. The boundary lives in the nervous system. The nervous system is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Why the Nervous System Holds the Boundary

The nervous system holds the boundary for a reason that the cognitive work alone cannot replicate. The reason is that the boundary, in the moment of the pressure, is not a thought. The boundary, in the moment of the pressure, is a state. The state is the activated or the regulated. The state is the work.

The activated state, in the moment of the boundary pressure, is the state of the chronic fight-or-flight. The fight-or-flight is the state of the chronic threat response. The threat response is the state of the chronic yielding. The yielding is the work.

The regulated state, in the moment of the boundary pressure, is the state of the chronic safety. The safety is the state of the chronic holding. The holding is the boundary. The boundary is the work.

The nervous system, when it is chronically exhausted, chronically depleted, chronically dysregulated, is the nervous system that defaults to the activated state. The activated state is the state of the chronic yielding. The yielding is the source of the chronic boundary failure. The failure is the work.

What the Biology of Boundaries Actually Is

The biology of boundaries is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of nourishing the nervous system, in a way that the nervous system has the capacity to hold the boundary, even in the moment of the pressure. The biology is the work. The work is the nourishment. The nourishment is the boundary. The boundary is the freedom.

The biology has three components. The three components are the foundation, the recovery, and the real-time regulation. The three are the work.

Component 1: The Foundation. The foundation is the first component. The foundation is the daily, non-negotiable, ongoing practice of nourishing the nervous system. The foundation is the work.

The foundation in practice: the sleep, the nutrition, the movement, the breath, the somatic regulation, the recovery. The foundation is the substrate. The substrate is the work.

Component 2: The Recovery. The recovery is the second component. The recovery is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of recovering the nervous system, after the boundary pressure, so the nervous system is not depleted. The recovery is the work.

The recovery in practice: the deliberate, post-pressure body-based practice, the slow exhale, the body scan, the gentle movement, the somatic processing of the activated state. The recovery is the restoration. The restoration is the work.

Component 3: The Real-Time Regulation. The real-time regulation is the third component. The real-time regulation is the deliberate, structured, in-the-moment practice of regulating the nervous system, in the moment of the boundary pressure, so the boundary is held. The regulation is the work.

The real-time regulation in practice: the 90-second reset, the slow exhale, the body scan, the deliberate, body-based regulation of the activated state, in the moment of the pressure. The regulation is the source. The source is the work.

How the Biology Is Built Over 90 Days

The biology is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.

Days 1-30: The Foundation. The sleep, the nutrition, the movement, the breath. The foundation is the work.

Days 31-60: Add the Recovery. The post-pressure body-based practice, the slow exhale, the body scan. The recovery is the work.

Days 61-90: Add the Real-Time Regulation. The 90-second reset, the slow exhale, the body scan, the deliberate regulation. The regulation is the work.

By the end of the 90 days, the three components are in place. The three components are the biology of boundaries. The biology is the work. The work is the boundary. The boundary is the freedom.

What the Biology Looks Like in the Actual Boundary Pressure

Let me describe what the biology looks like in the actual boundary pressure. The pressure is the moment the boundary is being tested. The difficult colleague, the draining friend, the family member. The pressure is the work.

With the biology in place, the pressure is different. The pressure is still the pressure. The boundary is still being tested. The difference is the response. The response is the foundation, the source, holding. The response is the recovery, the source, supporting. The response is the real-time regulation, the source, regulating. The response is the biology. The biology is the work.

Without the biology in place, the pressure is the chronic yielding. The yielding is the work.

The "Pause & Reflect" Moment

Take 10 seconds and think about the last time a boundary failed. What was the state of your body in the moment? What was the nervous system doing? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the biology of boundaries.

What the Biology of Boundaries Is Not

It is not the avoidance of the cognitive work. The biology is not the way of bypassing the cognitive project of the boundary. The cognitive project is the work. The biology is the foundation. The foundation supports the project. The project is the work.

It is also not the optimization. The biology is not the optimization of the nervous system, in the productivity culture sense. The optimization is the source of the chronic over-focus. The biology is the nourishment. The nourishment is the work.

When the Biology Is Not Enough

The biology is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical depression, for the trauma of a chronically dysregulated nervous system. If the nervous system is so dysregulated that the biology cannot be built, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A doctor. A specialist. The biology is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.

Closing: The Biology Is the Boundary

The biology is the boundary. The boundary is the work. The work is the nervous system. The nervous system is the foundation. The foundation is the freedom.

You are not the boundary failure. The boundary failure is the work of the exhausted nervous system. The nervous system is the work. The work is the freedom.

And if you are noticing that the boundary is especially hard to hold, that the nervous system is especially exhausted, that the chronic yielding is especially entrenched, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-agreeableness person whose nervous system has been shaped to yield, the high-neuroticism person whose nervous system is on chronic high alert, the high-sensitivity person whose nervous system is reading the environment as the chronic threat — so the biology of boundaries is shaped to fit the person you actually are.

An expanded edition of Don Riso's revoluntionary interpretation of the Enneagram—the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. This expanded edition of Don Riso's classic for the first time uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published.
