The Cellular Level Fortress: Boosting Your Cellular Health to Drive Daily Willpower and Focus

The Cellular Level Fortress: Boosting Your Cellular Health to Drive Daily Willpower and Focus

Let me start with a fact that I think will be useful for the rest of your life. The decision you made at 3 PM, the decision to skip the workout, the decision to reach for the snack, the decision to open the social media, the decision to procrastinate the difficult task — that decision was not, in the cognitive sense, the decision of the adult you. That decision was the decision of the cellular you. The cellular you, in that moment, was depleted. The depletion was the decision. The decision was the work.

Most of the people I work with, when I tell them this, look at me with a kind of quiet recognition. The recognition is the work. The recognition is the moment the chronic struggle with the willpower, the focus, the discipline, the self-control, is reframed. The reframe is the cellular level. The cellular level is the work.

The cellular level fortress is the practice of building the cellular health, in a way that the cellular you is not depleted, in a way that the cellular you is the source of the daily willpower and the daily focus. The fortress is the work. The work is the cell. The cell is the freedom.

What the Cellular Level Actually Is

The cellular level is the level of the cell. The cell is the smallest unit of the body. The cell is the source of the energy, the function, the resilience. The cell is the work.

The cell, in the modern life, is under chronic attack. The attack is the chronic stress, the chronic sleep deprivation, the chronic inflammatory diet, the chronic sedentary lifestyle, the chronic environmental toxins. The attack is the source of the chronic cellular depletion. The depletion is the work.

The depletion, at the cellular level, is the source of the chronic willpower deficit. The deficit is the source of the chronic focus deficit. The deficit is the source of the chronic discipline deficit. The deficit is the work.

What the Cellular Level Fortress Actually Is

The fortress is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of supporting the cellular health, in a way that the cellular you is the source of the daily willpower and the daily focus. The fortress is the work. The work is the cell. The cell is the freedom.

The fortress has three components. The three components are the cellular nutrition, the cellular energy, and the cellular protection. The three are the work.

Component 1: The Cellular Nutrition. The cellular nutrition is the first component. The cellular nutrition is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of feeding the cell the nutrients the cell needs. The nutrition is the work.

The cellular nutrition in practice: the whole-foods diet, the colorful vegetables, the healthy fats, the lean proteins, the targeted supplementation when needed. The cellular nutrition is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Component 2: The Cellular Energy. The cellular energy is the second component. The cellular energy is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of supporting the cellular energy production. The energy is the work.

The cellular energy in practice: the sleep, the movement, the breath, the targeted mitochondrial support. The cellular energy is the source. The source is the work.

Component 3: The Cellular Protection. The cellular protection is the third component. The cellular protection is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of protecting the cell from the things that damage it. The protection is the work.

The cellular protection in practice: the reduction of the inflammatory foods, the reduction of the environmental toxins, the management of the chronic stress, the support of the immune system. The cellular protection is the marker. The marker is the work.

How the Fortress Is Built Over 90 Days

The fortress is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.

Days 1-30: The Cellular Nutrition. The whole-foods diet, the colorful vegetables, the healthy fats. The nutrition is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Days 31-60: Add the Cellular Energy. The sleep, the movement, the breath. The energy is the source. The source is the work.

Days 61-90: Add the Cellular Protection. The reduction, the management, the support. The protection is the work.

By the end of the 90 days, the three components are in place. The three components are the cellular level fortress. The fortress is the work. The work is the cell. The cell is the freedom.

What the Fortress Looks Like in the Actual 3 PM Decision

Let me describe what the fortress looks like in the actual 3 PM decision. The 3 PM is the moment the willpower is most tested. The 3 PM is the moment the focus is most tested. The 3 PM is the moment the cellular you is most depleted. The 3 PM is the work.

With the fortress in place, the 3 PM is different. The 3 PM is still the 3 PM. The decision is still the decision. The difference is the cellular you. The cellular you, having been nourished, having been energized, having been protected, is the cellular you that has the capacity to make the decision the adult you would make. The cellular capacity is the source. The source is the work.

Without the fortress in place, the 3 PM is the chronic depletion. The depletion is the decision. The decision is the work.

The "Pause & Reflect" Moment

Take 10 seconds and think about the last 3 PM decision. What was the cellular you doing? What was the energy like? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the cellular level fortress.

What the Cellular Level Fortress Is Not

It is not the supplement stack. The fortress is not the addition of the expensive supplements, the proprietary blends, the magic pills. The fortress is the foundation of the nutrition, the sleep, the movement, the protection. The foundation is the work. The supplement is the support. The support is the work.

It is also not the optimization. The fortress is not the optimization of the cell, in the productivity culture sense. The optimization is the source of the chronic over-focus. The fortress is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

When the Fortress Is Not Enough

The fortress is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical depression, for the chronic fatigue syndrome, for any condition that requires professional care. If the cellular depletion is producing the clinical symptoms, the right move is professional support. A doctor. A specialist. The fortress is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.

Closing: The Cell Is the Willpower

The cell is the willpower. The willpower is the cell. The cell is the work. The work is the cell. The cell is the freedom.

You are not the willpower deficit. The willpower deficit is the work of the cellular depletion. The cell is the work. The work is the fortress. The fortress is the freedom.

And if you are noticing that the cellular depletion is especially entrenched, that the chronic willpower deficit is especially hard, that the 3 PM decision is especially difficult, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-work is the cellular depletion, the high-neuroticism person whose chronic anxiety is the cellular depletion, the high-sensitivity person whose chronic activation is the cellular depletion — so the cellular level fortress is shaped to fit the person you actually are.

This compels us to understand ourselves and to clarify our identity. This “search for self” is also what leads many of us to personality typology. We sense that understanding our type (e.g., INFJ) might give us insight into ourselves, as well as the role we might play in the larger theater of life.Unfortunately, many personality books provide only a superficial understanding of the types.
