The Deep Resilience Blueprint: Creating a Balance of Physical Energy and Mental Fortitude

I want to start with an image that I think will be useful for the rest of your life. The image is a coin. Not just any coin — a coin that has two sides, and that cannot stand on its edge. The coin can stand on the heads, or the coin can stand on the tails, but the coin cannot stand on the edge. The edge is the instability. The heads is one side. The tails is the other side. The two sides are the work. The two sides are the resilience.

Most of the adults I work with, when I ask them to look at their coin, show me only one side. The physical side, all physical. The mental side, all mental. The chronic imbalance is the source of the chronic instability. The instability is the source of the chronic collapse. The collapse is the work.

The deep resilience blueprint is the practice of building both sides of the coin. The physical energy is one side. The mental fortitude is the other side. The two sides are the work. The two sides are the resilience. The resilience is the freedom.

Why the One-Sided Coin Always Falls

The one-sided coin always falls for a reason that the personal development industry rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the one-sided coin is the coin that is being held up by the single source. The single source is the source of the chronic over-reliance. The over-reliance is the source of the chronic vulnerability. The vulnerability is the work.

The one-sided coin, when the single source fails, falls. The fall is the source of the chronic collapse. The collapse is the work. The two-sided coin, when one side fails, holds. The hold is the source of the chronic resilience. The resilience is the work.

What the Deep Resilience Blueprint Actually Is

The blueprint is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of building both sides of the coin. The blueprint is the work. The work is the two sides. The two sides are the resilience. The resilience is the freedom.

The blueprint has two sides. The two sides are the physical energy and the mental fortitude. The two are the work.

Side 1: The Physical Energy. The physical energy is the first side. The physical energy is the body, the body-based capacity, the body-based resilience. The physical energy is the work.

The physical energy in practice: the sleep, the nutrition, the movement, the breath, the recovery, the somatic practices. The physical energy is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Side 2: The Mental Fortitude. The mental fortitude is the second side. The mental fortitude is the mind, the mind-based capacity, the mind-based resilience. The mental fortitude is the work.

The mental fortitude in practice: the reflection, the journaling, the reframe, the perspective-taking, the deliberate examination of the beliefs, the values review, the meaning reflection. The mental fortitude is the source. The source is the work.

How the Blueprint Is Built Over 90 Days

The blueprint is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.

Days 1-30: The Physical Energy. The body, the foundation, the work.

Days 31-60: Add the Mental Fortitude. The mind, the source, the work.

Days 61-90: Balance the Two. The two sides, the integration, the work.

By the end of the 90 days, the two sides are in place. The two sides are the deep resilience. The resilience is the work.

What the Blueprint Looks Like in the Actual Crisis

Let me describe what the blueprint looks like in the actual crisis. The crisis is the moment the coin is being tested. The crisis is the work.

With the blueprint in place, the crisis is different. The crisis is still the crisis. The testing is still the testing. The difference is the two sides. The physical energy, the foundation, holding. The mental fortitude, the source, holding. The two sides are the coin. The coin is the work.

Without the blueprint in place, the crisis is the chronic fall. The fall is the work.

The "Pause & Reflect" Moment

Take 10 seconds and think about the two sides. The physical energy, the mental fortitude. For each one, rate it on a 1-5 scale, where 1 is depleted and 5 is full. The ratings are the snapshot. The snapshot is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work.

What the Deep Resilience Blueprint Is Not

It is not the optimization. The blueprint is not the optimization of the two sides, in the productivity culture sense. The optimization is the source of the chronic over-focus. The blueprint is the balance. The balance is the work.

It is also not the perfection. The blueprint is not the perfect execution of the two sides, every day, at the highest level. The blueprint is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the deep resilience. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.

When the Blueprint Is Not Enough

The blueprint is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical depression, for the trauma of a chronically compromised system. If the system is so compromised that the blueprint cannot be built, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A doctor. A specialist. The blueprint is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.

Closing: The Two Sides Are the Resilience

The two sides are the resilience. The resilience is the work. The work is the body, the mind. The two are the coin. The coin is the work. The work is the freedom.

You are not the one-sided coin. The one-sided coin is the source of the chronic fall. The two-sided coin is the source of the chronic resilience. The resilience is the work. The work is the freedom.

And here is one more thing before you go. The next time you notice yourself favoring one side of the coin — staying in the mind, neglecting the body, or staying in the body, neglecting the mind — pause long enough to ask: which side am I neglecting, and what is that neglect costing me? The honest answer is the calibration. The calibration is the balance. The balance is the deep resilience. The resilience is the work. The work is the freedom.

And one more thing. The next time you are facing a real crisis — a loss, a setback, a sudden change — pause long enough to ask: which side of the coin am I leaning on right now? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the balance. The balance is the two sides. The two sides are the coin. The coin is the deep resilience. The resilience is the freedom.

And if you are noticing that one of the sides is especially hard, that the wiring makes one of the sides the natural strength and another the chronic struggle, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-conscientiousness person whose mental side is the chronic default, the high-neuroticism person whose physical side is the chronic casualty, the high-extraversion person whose social side has been the chronic escape — so the deep resilience blueprint is shaped to fit the person you actually are.

An expanded edition of Don Riso's revoluntionary interpretation of the Enneagram—the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. This expanded edition of Don Riso's classic for the first time uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published.
