I sat down to write at 9 AM. By 9:07 AM, I had checked my email, responded to a Slack message, glanced at a news alert, and opened Twitter — not because I wanted to, but because my hand moved to the tab before my brain had time to intervene. They're less susceptible to distraction — not because distraction is less appealing, but because their inhibitory control is stronger. This is partly genetic. But it's also trainable. Self-regulation is like a muscle. It fatigues with overuse, but it also strengthens with practice. The conscientious person has a head start. The less conscientious person can close the gap — not all the way, but enough to make a difference.
Neuroticism works against focus in a specific way. The neurotic brain doesn't just get distracted. It gets hijacked. A worry surfaces — about a deadline, about a conversation, about the vague sense that something is wrong — and the attention follows. The worry becomes the focus. Pause and Reflect: When you try to focus, what actually breaks your attention? Not the external thing — the internal state. Boredom? Anxiety? The urge for novelty? The pull of something easier? The interruption is not the cause. It's the symptom. What's the cause?
The neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley has studied what he calls "interference" — the way our attention systems get hijacked by competing stimuli. His research shows that it's not just external interruptions that break focus. It's also internal goals competing for the same cognitive resources. You're trying to write a report, but part of your brain is also tracking your inbox, your phone, your anxiety about the presentation next week. These internal goals create "goal interference" that fragments attention even in the absence of external pings. The deep work habit requires not just managing your environment but managing your internal goal structure — closing loops, capturing obligations, reducing the cognitive load of unfinished business that lurks in the background.
A practical technique: before a deep work session, do a "brain dump" of everything that's on your mind. Worries. Tasks. Ideas. Get them out of your head and onto paper. The physical act of externalizing reduces the cognitive load. Your brain doesn't have to keep tracking those things because they're captured somewhere. The freed-up capacity becomes available for focus. This takes two minutes. The return, in terms of sustained attention, is disproportionate.
So: can you build the trait of focus? The answer is yes, but not the way most productivity advice suggests. The standard advice — turn off notifications, use a timer, create a dedicated workspace — is useful but insufficient. Those are environmental interventions. They reduce external distraction. They don't address internal distraction — the restlessness, the anxiety, the low boredom threshold that drives you to seek interruption even when no ping has arrived.
Building focus requires training the internal capacity for sustained attention. This is what meditation does. Not in a spiritual sense. In a neurological sense. Meditation is attention training. You focus on something — the breath, a sensation — and when your attention wanders, you bring it back. That's the whole practice. And the "bringing it back" is the part that builds the muscle. Every time you notice your attention has wandered and you return it to the object, you're strengthening the neural pathways that support sustained focus. Over time — weeks, months — the muscle gets stronger. The attention stays longer. The distractions, internal and external, have less power.
Another practice that helps: deliberate boredom. We've trained our brains to expect constant stimulation. Every empty moment gets filled with a phone, a podcast, a scroll. The brain loses its tolerance for the low-stimulation states that deep work requires. Rebuilding that tolerance means practicing being bored. Standing in line without your phone. Sitting with your thoughts for ten minutes. Letting the restlessness rise and fall without feeding it. This is uncomfortable. It's supposed to be. The discomfort is the signal that you're rebuilding a capacity that constant stimulation has atrophied.
Focus is not a fixed trait. It's a skill that can be built — slowly, imperfectly, with many setbacks. Your personality gives you a starting point. Conscientiousness helps. Neuroticism hinders. Openness creates a specific kind of challenge. But none of these are destiny. The brain is plastic. Attention is trainable. The pings will keep coming. The question is whether you'll keep responding to them, or whether you'll rebuild the capacity to ignore them long enough to do the work that matters.
