I want to start with a confession that I think will produce a recognition in the people who need it most. You have started, and stopped, and started, and stopped, and started, and stopped, more times than you can count. The projects. The habits. The relationships. The intentions. The start-and-stop has not been a moral failing. The start-and-stop has been a wiring. The wiring is the work. The work is the source of the chronic shame, the chronic self-doubt, the chronic belief that you are, somehow, broken. The broken is the work. The work is the source of the chronic giving-up. The giving-up is the work.
The start-and-stop pattern is the pattern that is especially common in the neurodivergent brain — the ADHD brain, the autistic brain, the dyslexic brain, the brains that have been wired for the different, the brains that have been chronically misread as the broken. The misread is the work. The work is the source of the chronic shame. The shame is the work.
Healing the mental momentum for the neurodivergent brain is the practice of working with the wiring, not against it. The work is the work. The work is the source of the actual momentum. The momentum is the freedom.
Why the Neurodivergent Brain Starts-and-Stops
The neurodivergent brain starts-and-stops for a reason that the popular productivity culture rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the neurodivergent brain is wired for the novel, the interesting, the urgent, the dopamine-rich. The wiring is the work. The wiring is the source of the chronic start. The start is the work.
The neurodivergent brain, in the chronic start, is also the brain that is chronically bored by the routine, the repetitive, the mundane. The boredom is the work. The boredom is the source of the chronic stop. The stop is the work.
The start-and-stop is the chronic pattern. The pattern is the work. The pattern is the source of the chronic shame. The shame is the source of the chronic belief that the wiring is the broken. The broken is the work.
What the Mental Momentum Healing Actually Is
The mental momentum healing is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of working with the wiring, in a way that the chronic start-and-stop is interrupted. The healing is the work. The work is the awareness. The awareness is the source. The source is the freedom.
The healing has three components. The three components are the design component, the dopamine component, and the compassion component. The three are the work.
Component 1: The Design Component. The design component is the first component. The design component is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the design, in a way that the environment is designed to support the wiring. The design component is the work.
The design component in practice: the removal of the friction, the addition of the friction to the unwanted behaviors, the reduction of the decision fatigue, the use of the visual cues, the body doubling, the accountability partner. The design is the source. The source is the work.
Component 2: The Dopamine Component. The dopamine component is the second component. The dopamine component is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the dopamine management, in a way that the chronic dopamine dysregulation is interrupted. The dopamine component is the work.
The dopamine component in practice: the celebration of the small wins, the chunking of the projects into the dopamine-sized pieces, the use of the novelty to maintain the engagement, the use of the reward immediately after the work. The dopamine is the source. The source is the work.
Component 3: The Compassion Component. The compassion component is the third component. The compassion component is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of the self-compassion, in a way that the chronic shame is released, in a way that the chronic start-and-stop is the work of the wiring, not the work of the moral failing. The compassion component is the work.
The compassion component in practice: the daily, deliberate, non-negotiable practice of the self-compassion, in the moment of the stop, in the moment of the shame, in the moment of the chronic "I have failed again." The self-talk: "I am not failing. I am wiring. The wiring is the work. The work is the freedom." The compassion is the marker. The marker is the work.
How the Healing Is Built Over 90 Days
The healing is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.
Days 1-30: The Design Component. The removal of the friction, the addition of the cues, the foundation. The foundation is the work.
Days 31-60: Add the Dopamine Component. The celebration, the chunking, the novelty, the source. The source is the work.
Days 61-90: Add the Compassion Component. The daily self-compassion, the marker. The marker is the work.
By the end of the 90 days, the three components are in place. The three components are the mental momentum healing. The healing is the work. The work is the momentum. The momentum is the freedom.
What the Healing Looks Like in the Actual Start-and-Stop
Let me describe what the healing looks like in the actual start-and-stop. The start-and-stop is the moment the project is started, the moment the project is stopped, the moment the shame is arriving. The start-and-stop is the work.
With the healing in place, the start-and-stop is different. The start-and-stop is still the start-and-stop. The shame is still arriving. The difference is the healing. The healing is the design, the foundation, the source of the support. The healing is the dopamine, the source, the source of the engagement. The healing is the compassion, the marker, the source of the release. The healing is the work.
Without the healing in place, the start-and-stop is the chronic shame. The shame is the work.
The "Pause & Reflect" Moment
Take 10 seconds and notice the last project you started and stopped. What did the shame say? What did the chronic belief about yourself say? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the mental momentum healing.
What the Mental Momentum Healing Is Not
It is not the willpower. The healing is not the way of pushing through the start-and-stop, in the name of the momentum. The pushing is the work. The pushing is the source of the chronic shame. The shame is the work.
It is also not the perfection. The healing is not the perfect execution of the three components, every start-and-stop, at the highest level. The healing is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the actual momentum. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.
When the Healing Is Not Enough
The healing is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe ADHD, for clinical executive dysfunction, for the trauma of a chronically misunderstood brain. If the start-and-stop is producing a clinical crisis, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A psychiatrist. A coach. The healing is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.
Closing: The Wiring Is the Work
The wiring is the work. The work is the healing. The healing is the freedom.
You are not the chronic start-and-stop. The chronic start-and-stop is the work of the chronic wiring. The healing is the work. The work is the freedom.
And if you are noticing that the start-and-stop is especially chronic, that the wiring is especially hard to work with, that the chronic shame is especially entrenched, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-openness person whose novelty-seeking is the chronic start, the high-neuroticism person whose chronic anxiety is the chronic stop, the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-control is the chronic shame — so the mental momentum healing is shaped to fit the person you actually are.
