The Voice of Authority: Somatic Voice Techniques to Sound Calm, Confident, and Grounded in Confrontations

The voice you have, in the confrontation, is the voice of the nervous system you have, in the confrontation. The voice is the downstream. The nervous system is the upstream. The Voice of Authority: Somatic Voice Techniques to Sound Calm, Confident, and Grounded in Confrontations

I want to start with an observation that I have made hundreds of times in my practice, and that I think will be useful for the rest of your life. The voice you have, in the confrontation, is the voice of the nervous system you have, in the confrontation. The voice is the downstream. The nervous system is the upstream. The upstream is the work.

Most of the people I work with, when they are in the confrontation, are using a voice that they would not recognize as their own. The voice is the high voice. The voice is the fast voice. The voice is the thin voice. The voice is the voice of the activated nervous system. The voice is the source of the chronic confrontation failure. The failure is the work.

The voice of authority is the alternative. The voice of authority is the voice that is produced by the regulated nervous system. The voice is the work. The work is the body. The body is the voice. The voice is the freedom.

Why the Voice Matters in the Confrontation

The voice matters in the confrontation for a reason that the professional development culture rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the voice is the most immediate, most visceral, most body-based signal of the nervous system state. The listener, in the confrontation, is not listening to the words. The listener is listening to the voice. The voice is the signal. The signal is the work.

The voice of the activated nervous system is the voice that the listener is hearing, in the confrontation. The voice is the source of the chronic being-overlooked, the chronic being-dismissed, the chronic being-not-taken-seriously. The not-taken-seriously is the work.

The voice of the regulated nervous system is the voice that the listener is hearing, in the confrontation. The voice is the source of the chronic being-respected, the chronic being-heard, the chronic being-taken-seriously. The taken-seriously is the work.

What the Voice of Authority Actually Is

The voice of authority is the voice that is produced by the regulated nervous system, in the confrontation. The voice is the work. The work is the body. The body is the voice. The voice is the freedom.

The voice has three components. The three components are the breath component, the resonance component, and the pace component. The three are the work.

Component 1: The Breath Component. The breath component is the first component. The breath component is the deliberate, structured, in-the-confrontation practice of the slow exhale, in a way that produces the calm, in the confrontation, in the voice. The breath component is the work.

The breath component in practice: the slow exhale, longer than the inhale, in the moment of the confrontation, in the moment of the difficult question, in the moment of the senior leader's challenge. The breath is the source of the calm. The calm is the source of the voice. The voice is the work.

Component 2: The Resonance Component. The resonance component is the second component. The resonance component is the deliberate, structured, in-the-confrontation practice of the speaking from the chest, in a way that produces the resonance, in the voice. The resonance component is the work.

The resonance component in practice: the speaking from the chest, not the throat. The speaking with the felt sense of the chest vibrating, not the felt sense of the throat constricting. The resonance is the source of the depth. The depth is the source of the voice. The voice is the work.

Component 3: The Pace Component. The pace component is the third component. The pace component is the deliberate, structured, in-the-confrontation practice of the speaking at a slower pace, in a way that produces the groundedness, in the voice. The pace component is the work.

The pace component in practice: the speaking at a pace that is slower than the usual. The deliberate, slow, paced, in the moment of the difficult. The pace is the source of the groundedness. The groundedness is the source of the voice. The voice is the work.

How the Voice Is Built Before the Confrontation

The voice, like any skill, is built before the confrontation. The building is the practice. The practice is the work.

The practice protocol: the three components, practiced daily, for 5-10 minutes, in the calm. The calm practice is the installation. The installation is the work.

After 2-3 weeks of the calm practice, the components are available in the confrontation. The availability is the work. The work is the voice. The voice is the freedom.

What the Voice Looks Like in the Actual Confrontation

Let me describe what the voice looks like in the actual confrontation. The confrontation is the moment of the fire. The fire is the work.

With the voice in place, the confrontation is different. The confrontation is still the confrontation. The fire is still the fire. The difference is the voice. The voice is the breath, the foundation, the source of the calm. The voice is the resonance, the source, the source of the depth. The voice is the pace, the marker, the source of the groundedness. The voice is the work.

Without the voice in place, the confrontation is the chronic high voice. The voice is the work.

The "Pause & Reflect" Moment

Take 10 seconds and remember the last confrontation. What did the voice do? What did the chronic over-reaction look like? What would the voice of authority have looked like? The answer is the diagnostic. The diagnostic is the work. The work is the voice of authority.

What the Voice of Authority Is Not

It is not the performance. The voice is not the way of performing the authority, in the confrontation, in the meeting, in the conversation. The performance is the source of the chronic inauthenticity. The voice is the way of producing the authority, in the body, in the way that the authority becomes the actual voice. The actual is the work.

It is also not the perfection. The voice is not the perfect execution of the three components, every confrontation, at the highest level. The voice is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the available voice. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.

When the Voice Is Not Enough

The voice is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical performance anxiety, for the trauma of a chronically activated nervous system. If the activation is so entrenched that the voice cannot be built, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A coach. A specialist. The voice is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.

Closing: The Voice Is the Authority

The voice is the authority. The authority is the work. The work is the body. The body is the voice. The voice is the freedom.

You are not the chronic high voice. The chronic high voice is the work of the chronic activation. The voice of authority is the work. The work is the freedom.

And if you are noticing that the voice is especially hard to access, that the chronic activation is especially entrenched, that the authority is especially difficult to produce, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-neuroticism person whose nervous system is the chronic activation, the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-control is the chronic activation, the high-sensitivity person whose nervous system is the chronic activation — so the voice of authority is shaped to fit the person you actually are.
