Unlearning the "Urgency" Mindset: Mental Unplugging for Type-A Leaders

I want to start with a confession that I think will be useful for the rest of your life, especially if you are the kind of person who is reading this article at 11 PM, between emails, with the Slack notification still open, with the half-finished to-do list still on the desk.

The urgency you have been living in, the chronic urgency, the always-on, the something-is-always-on-fire urgency, is not a sign that you are important. The urgency is a sign that the system, the nervous system, has been hijacked. The hijack is the work.

Most of the high-achieving, type-A leaders I work with, when they finally sit down in my office, will tell me, with a kind of quiet confession, that they cannot remember the last time they were not in a hurry. The not-in-a-hurry is the work. The work is the source of the chronic burnout, the chronic reactivity, the chronic over-functioning. The over-functioning is the work.

Unlearning the urgency mindset is the practice of reclaiming the not-in-a-hurry. The not-in-a-hurry is the work. The work is the body. The body is the slow. The slow is the freedom.

Why the Urgency Mindset Is the Default for Type-A Leaders

The urgency mindset is the default for type-A leaders for a reason that the leadership culture rarely acknowledges. The reason is that the urgency, in the short term, produces the visible results. The visible results are the source of the chronic validation. The validation is the work. The work is the source of the chronic urgency. The chronic urgency is the work.

The type-A leader, in the chronic urgency, is the leader who is producing the visible results. The visible results are the source of the chronic identity. The identity, in the chronic urgency, is the chronic production. The production is the work. The work is the source of the chronic over-functioning. The over-functioning is the work.

What the Mental Unplugging Actually Is

The mental unplugging is the deliberate, structured, ongoing practice of taking the mind, the body, the nervous system, off the grid, in a way that the chronic urgency is interrupted. The unplugging is the work. The work is the body. The body is the slow. The slow is the freedom.

The unplugging has three practices. The three practices are the scheduled micro-unplug, the daily longer unplug, and the weekly full unplug. The three are the work.

Practice 1: The Scheduled Micro-Unplug. The micro-unplug is the first practice. The micro-unplug is the brief, deliberate, in-the-day practice of the disconnection, in a way that the chronic urgency is interrupted, in real time. The micro-unplug is the work.

The micro-unplug in practice: 5-10 minutes, twice per day, scheduled, non-negotiable, the phone away, the email closed, the door closed, the breath, the body, the present. The micro-unplug is the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Practice 2: The Daily Longer Unplug. The longer unplug is the second practice. The longer unplug is the longer, deliberate, in-the-evening practice of the disconnection, in a way that the chronic urgency is interrupted, in the longer arc. The longer unplug is the work.

The longer unplug in practice: 30-60 minutes, in the evening, scheduled, non-negotiable, the work away, the news away, the screens away, the body, the relationship, the presence. The longer unplug is the source. The source is the work.

Practice 3: The Weekly Full Unplug. The full unplug is the third practice. The full unplug is the longer, deeper, weekly practice of the disconnection, in a way that the chronic urgency is interrupted, in the deeper cycle. The full unplug is the work.

The full unplug in practice: half a day to a full day, on the weekend, scheduled, non-negotiable, the work away, the email away, the phone away, the body, the nature, the connection, the rest. The full unplug is the marker. The marker is the work.

How the Unplugging Is Built Over 90 Days

The unplugging is built in 90 days, in the order of foundation first.

Days 1-30: The Scheduled Micro-Unplug. 5-10 minutes, twice per day, the foundation. The foundation is the work.

Days 31-60: Add the Daily Longer Unplug. 30-60 minutes, in the evening, the source. The source is the work.

Days 61-90: Add the Weekly Full Unplug. Half a day to a full day, on the weekend, the marker. The marker is the work.

By the end of the 90 days, the three practices are in place. The three practices are the unplugging. The unplugging is the work. The work is the body. The body is the slow. The slow is the freedom.

What the Unplugging Looks Like in the Actual Chronic Urgency

Let me describe what the unplugging looks like in the actual chronic urgency. The urgency is the moment the type-A leader is in the chronic over-functioning. The urgency is the work.

With the unplugging in place, the urgency is different. The urgency is still the urgency. The over-functioning is still the over-functioning. The difference is the unplugging. The unplugging is the micro-unplug, the foundation, the source of the small interruption. The unplugging is the longer unplug, the source, the source of the longer interruption. The unplugging is the full unplug, the marker, the source of the deeper interruption. The unplugging is the work.

Without the unplugging in place, the urgency is the chronic over-functioning. The over-functioning is the work.

The "Pause & Reflect" Moment

Take 10 seconds and remember the last time you were not in a hurry. What was the practice in your life, in that season? The memory is the data. The data is the work. The work is the unplugging.

What the Mental Unplugging Is Not

It is not the avoidance. The unplugging is not the way of avoiding the work, in the name of the rest. The work is real. The work is the work. The unplugging is the way of resting from the work, so the work is sustainable. The resting is the work.

It is also not the perfection. The unplugging is not the perfect execution of the three practices, every week, at the highest level. The unplugging is the consistent practice, with the imperfect execution, that produces the actual not-in-a-hurry. The imperfect is the work. The perfection is the source of the chronic shame.

When the Unplugging Is Not Enough

The unplugging is a daily practice. It is not a treatment for severe anxiety, for clinical burnout, for the trauma of a chronically over-functioning system. If the over-functioning is producing a clinical crisis, the right move is professional support. A therapist. A doctor. A specialist. The unplugging is the daily foundation. The professional support is the specialist intervention. The two work together.

Closing: The Slow Is the Freedom

The slow is the freedom. The freedom is the unplugging. The unplugging is the work. The work is the body. The body is the slow. The slow is the freedom.

You are not the urgency. The urgency is the work of the chronic over-functioning. The slow is the work. The work is the freedom.

And if you are noticing that the urgency is especially hard to release, that the chronic over-functioning is especially entrenched, that the not-in-a-hurry is especially difficult to access, that's worth understanding. Our personality insights can help you see the wiring — the high-conscientiousness person whose chronic over-control is the chronic urgency, the high-neuroticism person whose chronic anxiety is the chronic urgency, the high-extraversion person whose social activation is the chronic urgency — so the unplugging is shaped to fit the person you actually are.
